What are the most popular colored diamonds?

First, let us understand what are colored diamonds?

Colored diamonds are diamonds that have a visible body color when viewed in the face-up position. Brown & yellow are the common colors in colored diamonds. Diamonds with natural pink, blue, orange, green, red & violet body colors are extremely rare. The intensity of the color can vary from very light to vivid.

The price of the natural diamond depends on the rarity of the color of the diamond. Only one in 10000 diamonds have a fancy color.

There are two kinds of diamonds under the colored diamond category-

Natural Diamonds or Mined Diamonds

The natural diamonds are made up of billions of carbon atoms & were formed between one to three billion years ago, deep below the earth’s surface under intense heat & pressure.

Lab-grown diamonds or Man-Made diamonds

Lab grown diamonds are like test-tube babies that are grown in a lab from the single seed of the diamond under similar heat & pressure conditions like in the crust of the mother earth.

The most popular colors in fancy colored diamonds are-

Yellow

Some diamonds contain nitrogen to give yellow hints to otherwise colorless diamonds. The most common color grading scale varies from D to Z. It is usually caused by nitrogen atoms substituting the carbon in the diamond crystal lattice. It causes the diamond to selectively absorb blue light & transmit yellow.

Red

Red diamonds are the rarest diamonds in nature & they are the most valuable diamonds when in a pure hue. They have been exposed to stress which deformed the diamond crystal lattice causing carbon atom displacement. When the light passes through the planes, the red light is selectively transmitted.

Pink

It is one of the most loved and rare natural colors in diamonds. They have been subjected to stress within the earth & this force causes carbon atom displacement within the diamond crystal. When the light passes through the planes, the red light is selectively transmitted & when the selective transmission is weak, it appears pink.

Purple

Another scarce color in a diamond is purple. These diamonds have a purple or violet hue. They range in color from faint to very vivid purple & might contain a secondary hue like pink. They exhibit color concentration along glide planes of carbon atom displacement.

Blue

The blue color is also rare in nature. It is caused by boron atoms substituting for carbon atoms in the crystal lattice of diamonds that have formed at extreme depths. The boron present in the diamond crystal causes the selective absorption of red light & the selective transmission of blue.

Brown

It is the most common natural color in diamond & the color develops when the plastic deformation creates planes of missing & displaced carbon atoms in the diamond crystal lattice. They can appear as a parallel of color bands which is known as graining.

It depends on the user/buyer whether they want to go for lab created diamonds or natural diamonds because both are available in a different range of colors.

Lab grown diamonds have emerged as a sustainable option over natural diamonds. Today, lab created diamonds with an intentional color are common in the gem & jewelry industry. They are recycled diamonds that are an environmentally friendly choice and available at a much lower rate than natural diamonds.
